Taipei, Taiwan (AP) - Diners tempted to lick a plate after a delicious meal can now go a step further - eat the plate.

Chen Liang-erh, 50, an amateur inventor, announced Friday that he had perfected an edible plate made from wheat grain, and that he planned to mass-produce
it and other edible crockery including cups, bowls and food containers.

Chen spent six years developing the plate, which he said would retail at about 7 cents each.

Diners who don't want to eat the items - which taste like unsalted popcorn - can boil them for a nutritious meal for animals, he said.

Chen said this can help reduce pollution caused by discarded crockery. The only disadvantage, he said, is his crockery cannot be washed and reused.

Sounds like a workable alternative to paper plates and plastic dishes, for things like picnics.

Wonder if ants like wheat or corn grain or whatever.

Wow. Eatible Dishes? How cool.! If that ever did work out and I could buy some, I'd probably only want the plates and bowls. I could eat from them and then make my dogs a meal with that and some meat and vegies. *smile* I have already been thinking about how I might be able to get some good dishes without spending too much or worrying about them breaking or turning up missing. I was thinking of getting some hard plastic ones that look nice (instead of the glass ones), and also some disposable paper or plastic ones for when I want to give someone something so I won't have to worry about getting it back. (Actually the plastic ones could be washed to be used again or put in recycling.) I would also get plastic silverware for the same reasons, although I migh have some metal ones at home but I would not want the metal ones leaving the house. But with the eatible dishes, that would be cool because then if I ever went camping or just didn't feel like washing dishes, I could use them and then my dogs could easily get something out of it as well, or I could eat them myself with something. *smile*

The only thing is, if you had the bowls and wanted to put something hot and soupy like soup or beans or something, I wonder how good it would be for that.? I mean, I wonder if it could eventually leak thru the bowl.? I know it might "cook" it a little if it were too hot but yeah. There's probably a limit to what foods you can eat from it I would think.
